CIOs forge ahead while waiting for 'meaningful use' definition

Demonstrating meaningful use of healthcare information technology systems still remains unclear as federal recommendations for criteria have yet to be approved. Some CIOs are using the setback to their advantage and have begun implementing IT, while others are taking a more cautious approach.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 specifies that a provider's electronic health record system must be certified to qualify for incentives. At this point, only one body certifies EHRs - the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology.
