By the Numbers

$74 billion

That’s how much Alibaba Group Holding reported in sales for China’s Singles’ Day shopping festival, which began Nov. 1 and ran through Nov. 11. Alibaba, China’s retail e-commerce giant, expanded the 11th annual event to 11 days this year (it is usually one day) because of the coronavirus. It would allow customers to be more confident and resume shopping in stores."

— Walter Loeb, founder of the management consulting and strategic advisory firm Loeb Associates Inc., in a Nov. 11 column for Forbes on what the retail sector could look like early in 2021. Loeb previously spent 16 years as senior retail analyst at Morgan Stanley following a 20-year career with several retailers.
